The Nanas of Niki de Saint-Phalle in Saint-Tropez

In keeping with the tradition that has been established for several years of hosting sculptures by internationally renowned artists, this summer the Galerie Mitterrand is presenting, throughout the resort, five works by the famous Franco-American painter and sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002). Discover some of the major works of this controversial artist best known for her Nanas; sculptures of voluptuous and sensual female forms decorated with bold patterns of primary colours. These monumental creations are suggestive of liberated, independent and joyful women. The Niki de Saint-Phalle exhibition is an unmissable riot of gaiety and colour.

A few words about Niki de Saint-Phalle

This artist, who began her career in 1950 as a painter, created throughout her life a unique universe; a magical and phantasmagorical place where sphinxes, dragons, goddesses, totems and guardian angels abound. Her work became popular beyond the rarefied confines of the fine art world as she imbued her creations with humour and colour. In 1998 she opened her Tarot Garden, a gigantic sculpture park in Tuscany filled with monumental works based on the 22 cards of the major arcana of the tarot. The Nanas, first exhibited in 1965, were the artist’s way of exploring the various roles of women in society. Their generous shapes and colourful motifs are today recognised as the signature of a feminist artist who was rebellious, anti-racist, anti-clerical and forever popular.
